I am once again very pleased to send my best wishes to all freelancers on National Freelancers Day. I have a huge respect for all those who make the brave decision to branch out on their own and take control over the way they work. This year marks the third National Freelancers Day and each year it is getting bigger. Last year the message reached over 1 million people including recognition from the Prime Minister in this letter.

The goals for 23rd November 2011 (#nfd23Nov) are:

  • To help freelancers talk knowledgeably about the value they bring to British industry
  • To help British industry tap into that value
  • To secure the support of ministers who can help stimulate the sector
  • To create a useful flow of information and a more sophisticated talent market

The centrepiece of National Freelancers Day 2011 will be the freelance lecture, set to take place on 23rd November in Central London.

Set to a background of robust independent research, the lecture will host some of the world's leading speakers on flexible working as well as UK business leaders.

The panel will be debating the key questions around how British businesses can affect the UK economic recovery and grow if they use freelancing effectively.

"Future is freelance" said futurologist James Bellini at last year's lecture.

In his keynote speech he explained how the world is fragmenting and we are moving into a networked economy where an individual is as important as a big company. This offers fantastic opportunities for the businesses that can embrace the concept.

This year we will explore those opportunities in greater depth:

  • How can the business community best harness the opportunity?
  • How can the freelance community help them harness it?
  • How can we, as a society, as an economy, make sure the opportunity doesn't pass us by?
  • What challenges need to be overcome?
