Never, ever, take your client relationship for granted. They are in business as much as you are. Try to retain objectivity and a sense of "consultancy". Always be truthful and give them the benefit of your experience. Be impartial of the local politics and be your own person. After all, that is one of the great benefits of being in business on your own account.

Some tips for clients:
1. Put out advertisements personally, try to avoid agencies if possible.
2. Have everything prepared for the freelancer to get on with before they start, that way you get the most for your money.
3. Don't be fooled into thinking you're getting a good deal if you take someone on with low rates. You often get what you pay for.
4. A freelancer is not your employee, they are a 3rd-party offering a you service. If you have certain expectations make these known up-front and negotiate an agreement.
5. Avoid micro-management but make sure all your requirements are communicated clearly and re-assessed periodically.
6. Don't expect a freelancer to work unpaid overtime or work specific hours. If you have a reciprocal relationship, a freelancer will likely not mind doing the odd favour but should not feel obliged.
7. Try to be reasonably accommodating to the freelancer's schedule, it's quite possible you are not their only client.
